Optical Wireless Manufacturer Teams with World Leader In Network Design, Installation, Maintenance
RICHMOND, Canada. - Apr. 5, 2001 - fSONA Communications
Corp., a manufacturer of optical wireless systems, has
signed a long-term agreement with General Dynamics Worldwide
Telecommunications Systems (NYSE: GD) for global
installation and technical support services.
Under the agreement, General Dynamics' telecom engineers and
technicians will assist fSONA customers in the installation,
technical support and maintenance of the company's optical
wireless systems.
"With its worldwide deployment capabilities and
exceptional technical resources, General Dynamics is a
perfect fit for us," Theresa Carbonneau, chief
executive officer, fSONA, said. "We have already been
working together on a number of beta site installations, and
the relationship has proven highly effective for our
customers."
Last month, fSONA announced commercial availability of its
first optical wireless system, the SONAbeam 155-2, and
demonstrated its capabilities at the Broadband Wireless
Internet Forum in San Francisco. fSONA's systems provide
broadband Internet access, high-speed inter-LAN
connectivity, fiber-like extensions to SONET/SDH ring
services, PCS backhaul and short-haul campus links for
service providers and enterprises worldwide.
The company's SONAbeam 155-2 provides an optical wireless
link capable of carrying customer information over distances
of up to two kilometers (1.25 miles) at speeds up to 155
Mbps. The system is available for order now and is expected
to ship in May. The retail price for the SONAbeam 155-2
system is $30,000, including both ends needed for a full
optical wireless link.
fSONA will offer three optical wireless transceiver models
this year, including the SONAbeam 155-SH (short-haul) system
for distances up to 500 meters, and the SONAbeam 622-2
system that transmits 622 megabits per second over two
kilometers.
