fSONA Communications and WorldWide Wireless Networks Team Up to Provide
Broadband Connectivity to the Broadband Wireless World Forum
Vancouver, Canada - February 12, 2002 - fSONA Communications today announces
their participation in a demonstration of the ability of Free Space Optics'
to be rapidly deployed in order to serve a requirement for temporary broadband
telecommunications connectivity.
Together, fSONA Communications and WorldWide Wireless Networks (WWWN), have
provided a temporary broadband wireless Internet link to the Anaheim Hilton
Hotel. The show's producer, Shorecliff Communications has contracted WWWN
to provide connectivity during the event. fSONA has in turn contributed
one of their SONAbeam™ 155-M optical wireless links. The SONAbeam™ 155-M
will provide a Fast Ethernet connection from the Hilton to the WorldWide
Wireless Networks facility, located over 2.3 miles (3.7 kilometers) away.
The link will be used to webcast Keynote Addresses, as well as to provide
Internet based registration services, from the Hilton to Shorecliff's corporate
server. It will also be used to provide high-speed Internet access for conference
displays and exhibits located at the Hilton. Providing the Internet connection
with wireless technology and at a significant reduction in cost was a compelling
combination for a conference focused on broadband wireless technologies.
"This demonstration clearly proves that SONAbeam™ optical wireless technology
is reliable, available and ready for prime time". Says fSONA's President
& CEO, Theresa Carbonneau. "The entire SONAbeam™ product line has been engineered
to provide top performance in any environment".
"fSONA has developed a quality product which is already generating great
interest in our private and public sector target market." says Curt Collier
WWWN's VP of Sales and Marketing. "The ability to deploy these high bandwidth
laser systems quickly, without purchasing licenses, is a huge advantage
as compared to high bandwidth microwave systems that have taken us weeks
to get licensed. This application for Shorecliff's premier event is a perfect
example of how wireless technology is the way of the future for Internet
connectivity."
The units were installed by an fSONA Field Engineer and a WorldWide Wireless
Networks representative in less than one day and will remain until the end
of the Broadband Wireless World Forum on February 14th.
By transmitting through the atmosphere, SONAbeam™ dispenses with the substantial
costs and time-delays of digging up sidewalks to install a fiber link for
broadband access. As well, unlike RF wireless technologies, SONAbeam™ eliminates
the need to obtain costly spectrum licenses making it a perfect solution
for temporary connectivity.
