Free space optical wireless technology provides wide range of benefits for MTN's network

Vancouver, Canada - February 15, 2011 - fSONA Networks Corp, a leading provider of next generation free space optical (FSO) wireless solutions, today announced an order from MTN Yemen, the country's leading GSM network operators. The order sees MTN Yemen working with fSONA to install free space optical (FSO) technology in the capital of the Yemen, Sana'a, which will support crucial network infrastructure.

The wireless link, part of fSONA's E-series solutions, will connect two of MTN Yemen's Mobile Switching Centers (MSC).

Raed Ahmad, MTN Yemen CEO, confirmed that this was the first FSO link to be used within the network by the operator. "We are planning to use FSO technology from fSONA, with the aim to enable fast high capacity back up. In a growing market it is critical that we are able to respond to customer demand quickly and efficiently, and this requires a solution that is easy to deploy, has a lot of bandwidth and is scalable".

The fSONA 155 E link, used in the solution for MTN Yemen, is extremely versatile and can be easily transported to installation sites making it ideal for rapid deployment. It offers a solution to mobile operators that is reliable and requires no frequency management. It offers full rate, full duplex bandwidth and provides a convincing alternative to fiber optic cables that can be expensive and time consuming to lay.

"This agreement is a very exciting development for fSONA and has established a foothold for FSO technology in the wireless carrier market," commented Andrew Grieve, President & CEO of fSONA. fSONA's wireless systems offer a real opportunity to mobile operators who want to quickly and easily increase bandwidth in the backhaul and respond to customer demand.

"We are confident that MTN Yemen will see genuine results from this installation and hope that it is the start of many similar deployments."
