SONAbeam Free Space Optics Proven Transport Solution for Base Station Hotels
and Indoor Wireless Applications
Minneapolis and Vancouver, Canada – July 8, 2003
– ADC (NASDAQ: ADCT) and fSONA Communications today announced that
SONAbeam™ free space optics systems have successfully completed compatibility
testing at ADC’s testing facility in Minneapolis and are fully qualified
for use with ADC’s Digivance™ family of digital wireless coverage
solution products.
The Digivance system expands network coverage while providing a significant
cost savings to wireless carriers. By deploying the “Base Station
Hoteling” architecture, carriers can centralize base-station equipment
and rapidly deploy antennas where coverage and capacity issues exist. Digivance
then transports wideband RF via digital optical signals over fiber or free
space optics to economically expand coverage and capacity. Digivance also
solves the difficult challenge of covering entire buildings or campus facilities.
With the installation of this low-cost, high-quality solution, wireless
carriers can quickly and cost-effectively deliver coverage to corporate
facilities and other buildings where mobile users demand service.
Combining SONAbeam and Digivance eliminates the need for high cost fiber
construction and allows for the rapid deployment of new capacity coverage
required by wireless service providers. SONAbeam high-performance free space
optics systems are the perfect solution for wireless operators to extend
coverage and increase capacity. Designed for carriers from day one, the
SONAbeam series operates using the “eye-safe” 1550nm laser wavelength.
Operating at 1550nm allows SONAbeam to deliver exceptionally high transmit
power and link margins which translates into longer ranges and superior
availability through all weather conditions.
“Digivance provides wireless carriers with a variety of new, low-cost
options to extend coverage and capacity to their networks where it’s
needed,” said Jeff Quiram, president of the Wireless Business Unit
for ADC. “Integrating SONAbeam Free Space Optics with Digivance markedly
increases the potential locations for remote antennas and indoor wireless
coverage solutions.”
“ADC’s Digivance provides a path for wireless carriers to take
a major step forward in network efficiency for their mobile networks and
indoor wireless requirements extending both coverage and capacity and improving
the quality of service for their customers,” said Mike Corcoran, senior
vice president of sales and marketing for fSONA. “fSONA believes that,
with fSONA’s free space optical transmission system as a transport
option, Digivance will make a significant impact in the marketplace and
is extremely pleased to support the solution with SONAbeam. Supporting an
innovative solution like the Digivance is especially satisfying as it parallels
the work of fSONA to create economical solutions for carriers to expand
and enhance the quality, capacity, and coverage of their networks.”
